Save Kampung Maang Group regrets government decision

Kota Kinabalu: The Save Kampung Maang Group (SKMG) on Thursday expressed regret that their appeal to the Government to reconsider the resettlement of squatters to Maang has been misunderstood and misinterpreted as being against national interest.

Its Chairman, Frederick Mosom, said the people in Maang supported and had voted the Government of the day in the last few elections.

He said they did so due to their support for the national interest and also development which they believe only the Barisan Nasional (BN) government could deliver.

"We in Moyog and Maang together with the more than 5,000 signatories join in the exultation over the KKIA extension. "As a matter of fact, we would have preferred a larger expansion so that it can cater for our generations' need in the next 50 to 100 years," he said in a statement.

However, Frederick said in the crave for development "we do not want to blindly trade the current unity, peace, understanding and tranquillity of the people living here".

He said the unity and peace would be destroyed if the resettlement exercise were still carried out as proven in Boronuon and Kinarut to name just a few examples.

According to him, harmonious living among the community is no less important and should not be disregarded when considering other interest.

He hoped the Government would also consider the interest of the poor and landless since they also have been yearning to be accorded the same privilege designed for the Sri Tanjung squatters.

Frederick said the people in Maang are not surprised with Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Haji Aman's statement that the matter is considered closed.

"After all, (Suhakam Commissioner) Prof Dr Hamdan has comprehensively and unilaterally justified the relocation exercise," he said.

Nevertheless, he said the people would continue making appeals to the State and Federal Government to reconsider its decision.

"We are silently hoping that our government does not ignore our feelings because BN has always been willing to consider the people's sentiments although we are just a small fraction of the population," he said.

On other developments, he said they were made to understand that the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) consultant for the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) expansion has just been appointed.

He said this means the State or anyone for that matter are still in the dark about the expansion and, therefore, could not as yet appreciate the socio economic, biological and physio-chemical environmental and social impact of the mammoth project.

Frederick said the State Government would be in a better position to evaluate the project after the EIA report is completed including the site suitability for the new airport. He said it would also be interesting to look at measures to mitigate the environmental impacts.
